Home, Home on The Range(r): Wranglin’ Fords at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show
Another year means another Detroit Auto Show, and the 2018 edition did not disappoint. Always a good time for those in the automotive industry, or those just interested in the automotive industry, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), better known as the Detroit Auto Show, has happened 98 times since the inaugural 1907 event, and is only rivalled by KISS for homegrown Detroit theatricality. And luckily for those who couldn’t make it, the team from Lally Southpoint Ford were able to go and report back on the automotive trends and news worth knowing. So strap in, for the wild, electric and eclectic ride that is the 2018 Detroit Auto Show recap.
When we say electric — we mean electric! At the 2018 Detroit Auto Show Ford pledged a shocking 11 billion (with a capital B) dollars toward electric car production. That’s over double its prior commitment, and means we are that much closer toward electric F-150s and Mustangs; so you’ll be able to feel good about passing those nerds in their Prius’s (Priuses? Priai?). And speaking of Mustangs, Ford has brought back the legendary Bullitt Mustang, so you too can tear up the streets of your city in style like Steve McQueen (note, neither leading man good looks nor turtleneck included).
If you are more into sports than movies, it was announced that the historic Ford Bronco will be back for 2020. This juicy bit of news was only a teaser though, so you’ll have to come running back to Detroit for the 2019 Auto Show to find out more.
But that wasn’t even the best news for Ford enthusiasts from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show; the Ford Ranger, the best Ranger since Walker, Texas Ranger, is back and even better than ever. For the first time since its production ended in 2012, 2019 will see the return of the off-road ready Ford Ranger. The new Ranger has been “torture tested” to ensure that it will be ready for any terrain that dares cross your path. The truck will have no trouble cutting its way through the mud, ruts, grass, gravel, sand, or snow, especially with its ‘trail control’ feature, that will work like an off-road cruise control. Ford has been secretive as to what exactly will be under the hood, but Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president of product development and purchasing said the new Ranger will provide “a torque target on par with competing V6 engines, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder,” which leads us to believe they’ll be using some variation of the Ford EcoBoost engine. This means you won’t be burning up the ozone while blazing a trail. Win-win.
There’s probably some mildly exciting news coming from other manufacturers, but why go out and order a hamburger when you’ve got steak at home? Or, in lieu of steak, a beautifully crafted Ford vehicle found at Leamington Ontario’s favourite Ford dealership, Lally Southpoint Ford.
